The spacemic is a spatial audio microphone with 84 MEMS microphones on a solid disc.

The latest version of the VST/AU plugins allows to encode the raw microphone output directly to 5th order Ambisonics (36 channels) using the native high resolution of the microphone over a wide frequency range, plus upmixing to make the 5th-order quasi directivity frequency-independent.

More info in the talk from Svein Berge.

Requirements:

1) spacemic with USB-C cable, optional wind screen/cage for outdoor recording

2) on some Macbooks connect the included USB hub between Mac and spcmic, otherwise there might be connectivity problems.

3) download the latest 1.0.2 alpha software from https://harpex.net/spcmicsoftware/

4) Use the attached REAPER project.

Select the spacemic as Input.

Resolution: 5th order

Gain: because of the high dynamic range, you'll have to add a good amount of gain to bring the signal into a good range for playback

Use 32bit float as recording format, to avoid clipping the recording if using too much gain in the spcmic plugin.

We record the output of the track (Right-click on the record button), this will record 36 channels 5th order.

Use a different track for manipulations, eg. rotation, warping, directional_loudness, and rendering for the playbacksystem - speakers or headphones.

General signal flow scheme. Use your default audio interface for Reaper, the spacemic is connected through the plugin.
